Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Arvind Kejriwal, announces the Delhi Government’s vision to redesign 540 kms of 100-meter-wide roads in the capital as per European standards.
Work starts on 16 sample stretches across the city; totaling to close to 40km in length. Renowned Architects and Urban Designers from across the country are brought in to bring a new light to these streets.
In order to take-on the challenge of revamping the city’s roads, the Public Works Department of Delhi created the ‘Streetscaping Division’. The team constitutes talented engineers from within the PWD who work closely with field experts, designers and contractors to seamlessly translate the vision on ground.
The streetscaping project entailed a complete redesign of the right-of-way (ROW). The remodel followed international best practices and experienced design consultants were chosen for the same. Through the Streetscaping Project, the PWD, Delhi and Delhi Government devised a way of designing roads that emphasises the civic function of a street as a public open space. This has been achieved by adding features that enhance the experience, especially for those who are walking and cycling.
The main carriageway and junctions have been geometrically corrected to have a uniform and safer road that is universally accessible. The experiential quality of these streets have also been amplified through curated landscaping, shaded seating areas, state of the art lighting, sidewalks, sculptures, plazas and more.
